Dr. Andrew Mecca

Dr.Mecca currently serves as President of the California Mentor Foundation. Dr.Mecca served as California’s Drug Czar from 1991-1998. In mid-1993, he was elected President of the National Association of State Alcohol and Drug Abuse Directors. He also served as the Chair of the California Commission on Improving Life Through Service.

Dr.Mecca was Executive Director of the California Health Research Foundation from 1978-1991. A respected drug treatment professional for thirty years, Dr.Mecca is also known nationally for his role as Chairman of the California Task Force on self-esteem, which released its final report in 1990.

Dr.Mecca directed the Army’s Drug Treatment Program in Vietnam, for which he was awarded the Bronze Star. For 12 years, he was Chief of Alcohol and Drug Services in Marin County, in the San Francisco Bay Area.

For 30 years, Dr.Mecca has been a consultant to substance abuse programs in Australia, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Europe, India, China, and the United States. He has written five books and edited numerous publications on self-esteem, substance abuse treatment and prevention, and mentoring.

Dr.Mecca received his Master’s Degree and Doctorate in Public Health from the University of California, Berkeley.

A physical fitness enthusiast, Dr. Mecca is a marathon runner, and has participated in two cross-country runs from San Francisco to Washington D.C. He has also competed in the Ironman Triathlon in Hawaii and 50 marathons.
